Which milk filling machine suits your dairy?

The right machine depends mainly on your daily volume, container and how long your product needs to stay fresh.

Dairy type Typical setup Where to start
Small or farm dairy, starting out Semi-automatic gravity filler, manual or tabletop capper, hand-applied or semi-automatic labels Entry-level fillers such as the Handifiller
Growing dairy, several products Automatic in-line filler with capper and labeller, conveyors between machines Bottle filling machines, glass bottle fillers
High-volume, extended shelf life (ESL) or UHT Ultra-clean or aseptic rotary filling and capping line Serac aseptic fillers, ultra-clean filling

Many small dairies start with a semi-automatic filler and add capping and labelling automation as volumes grow. Tell us your bottle sizes and daily litres, and we will recommend a setup that fits your floor space and budget.

Filling milk into glass bottles

Filling milk into glass bottles

Glass suits premium and farm-fresh milk, and is popular with small dairies selling direct or through local retailers. Glass bottles need a filler that fills gently to a consistent level, a capper matched to the closure, and careful handling between machines.

Our glass bottle filling machines include gravity, flowmeter and volumetric options. For closures, see our glass bottle cappers.

Plastic milk bottles: HDPE and PET

HDPE and PET bottles are lighter and cheaper to ship than glass, and suit larger runs. Serac machines handle HDPE, PET, PP and PS containers. Serac’s SBL and Combox systems can also blow-mould PET bottles on site, removing the need to buy in empty bottles.

Yoghurt, cream and other dairy products

Yoghurt, cream and other dairy products

Thicker products such as yoghurt and cream need a different filling method from milk. Piston and net-weight fillers handle higher viscosity, and cups and tubs are sealed with a foil lid rather than a screw cap.

See our tub fillers, piston fillers and foil cap sealers.

        Serac dairy filling lines

Serac has built aseptic filling machines since 1978, starting with UHT milk in HDPE bottles. Its range covers UHT, sterilised, pasteurised and flavoured milks, yoghurts and creams, in HDPE, PET, PP, PS, glass or metal containers.

Serac aseptic lines use chemical sterilisation (peracetic acid or hydrogen peroxide) or electron-beam sterilisation (BluStream). They feature patented Multiflow magnetic filling valves, servo-driven cappers, hygienic heat sealers and a CIP/SIP cleaning module.

As Serac’s official distributor for Australia and New Zealand, Icon Equipment handles local sales, installation, technical support and spare parts. See our Serac page or Serac’s website.

              Milk bottling machine FAQs

What filling machine should a small dairy use for milk in glass bottles? Most small dairies start with a semi-automatic gravity filler, which fills thin liquids like milk gently and to a consistent level. Add a capper matched to your closure, then automate capping and labelling as volumes grow. Icon Equipment’s entry-level range, including the Handifiller, is designed for this.

Can the same machine fill milk and yoghurt? Usually not on the same filling head. Milk is thin and suits gravity or flowmeter fillers, while yoghurt and cream need piston or net-weight fillers. Yoghurt in cups or tubs is also sealed with a foil lid rather than a screw cap.

Who sells Serac milk filling machines in Australia? Icon Equipment International in Reservoir, Melbourne is the official Serac distributor for Australia and New Zealand. We handle sales, installation, technical support and spare parts for Serac dairy lines.

Can I buy a second-hand or hire a milk filling machine? Yes. Icon Equipment offers reconditioned and second-hand filling machines checked in our Melbourne workshop, plus equipment hire and rent-to-buy options.

Where can I get spare parts for a dairy filling machine? Icon Equipment stocks spare parts for the machines we supply and makes many parts in our Melbourne workshop, including change parts and replacements for obsolete components.
