How a Bottle Unscrambler Works — and How to Choose the Right One

Understanding how a bottle unscrambler works is the first step to fixing one of the most common bottlenecks on a filling line: getting empty containers from a bulk bin onto the conveyor, upright and in the right orientation, at the speed your filler needs.

When bottles are loaded by hand, a line is only as fast as the operator feeding it. A bottle unscrambler automates that job, so the rest of the line — filler, capper and labeller — receives a steady, correctly oriented supply.

What Is a Bottle Unscrambler?

A bottle unscrambler is a start-of-line machine that takes randomly piled empty containers, separates them, turns them upright and places them single-file onto a conveyor or into pucks. It is used across food, beverage, dairy, personal care, chemical and pharmaceutical lines — anywhere containers arrive in bulk rather than on pallets in fixed rows.

How a Bottle Unscrambler Works, Step by Step

Most unscramblers follow the same four stages:

    1. Bulk loading. Empty bottles are tipped into a hopper. An elevator or incline conveyor lifts them into the machine at a controlled rate so it is never flooded.
    2. Separation. Inside, a rotating bowl or disc spreads the bottles out and moves them toward the outer edge one at a time.
    3. Orientation. Each bottle drops into a pocket or guide sized for that container. Gravity, guides and air jets turn it neck-up, regardless of whether it arrived neck-first or base-first. Misaligned bottles are rejected back into the bowl and recirculated.
    4. Discharge. Upright bottles are transferred onto an air conveyor, vacuum conveyor or into pucks, ready for rinsing or filling.

The result is a continuous, evenly spaced stream of containers without operators handling every bottle.

The Main Types of Bottle Unscrambler

Rotary unscramblers use a large rotating disc with pockets around its circumference. They suit high-output lines and a wide range of container shapes. Icon Equipment’s rotary unscrambler processes up to 12,000 bottles per hour, discharging onto a vacuum conveyor or into pucks.

Compact high-speed unscramblers are built for small to mid-size lines where floor space matters. Icon Equipment’s high-speed model is designed for lines running 80–150 bottles per minute, with a compact footprint and tool-free changeover between formats.

Rotary tables are a lower-cost alternative for low-volume or manual lines. An operator places bottles upright on the table, which then accumulates and feeds them to the line. They do not orient bottles automatically, but they remove much of the stop-start handling. See our rotary tables.

      Bottle Unscrambler FAQ

How fast should my bottle unscrambler run? Slightly faster than your filler. A small buffer keeps the filler supplied when bottles are rejected and recirculated, so the line never stops waiting for containers.

Can one unscrambler handle different bottle shapes? Yes, within its size range. Changing format usually means swapping or adjusting guides and pockets; models with tool-free changeover make this a quick job between runs.

Does an unscrambler work with glass bottles? It depends on the design. Glass needs gentler handling than PET or HDPE, so confirm container material with the supplier and trial samples before buying.

What is the difference between an unscrambler and a rotary table? An unscrambler sorts and turns bottles upright automatically. A rotary table only accumulates and feeds bottles that an operator has already placed upright.

Do I need an unscrambler for a small line? Not always. Below a few thousand bottles a day, a rotary table is often enough. Once operators spend most of a shift loading bottles, an unscrambler usually pays for itself.

How to Choose the Right Bottle Unscrambler

Ask these six questions before you request a quote:

        • What speed does your filler need? Size the unscrambler to run slightly faster than your filler so the line is never starved.
        • Which containers will it handle? List every bottle you run — material (PET, HDPE, glass), diameter, height and shape. Square, oval and very light bottles behave differently from round ones.
        • How often do you change format? If you change bottles several times a day, tool-free changeover saves real production time.
        • How much floor space is available? Some unscramblers exceed three metres in length; compact designs fit tighter start-of-line areas.
        • What hygiene standard applies? Food and pharmaceutical lines need contact surfaces in suitable materials such as SUS304 stainless steel.
        • How will it connect to the rest of the line? Confirm the discharge method (air conveyor, vacuum conveyor or pucks) matches your rinser or filler infeed.

Signs Your Line Needs an Unscrambler

        • Operators spend most of a shift loading bottles by hand
        • Your filler regularly waits for containers
        • Fallen or inverted bottles cause jams downstream
        • You are adding a second shift mainly to keep up with container feeding

If two or more of these apply, an unscrambler usually pays for itself through labour savings and higher line uptime.
